De Gea’s impressive statistics show the alarming situation of MU’s defense over the past 11 years.
MU has just won an important 3-1 victory over Brentford to continue to raise hopes of competing for the top 4 in the Premier League . However, to be fair, this is a “Red Devils” match that did not play better, even being pressed by the opponent.
De Gea hits 1010 saves in the Premier League after helping MU beat Brentford
During 90 minutes, Brentford launched 18 shots, including 9 shots on goal compared to MU’s 13 shots (5 times on target). Even more shocking to know, goalkeeper David De Gea had to make 8 saves, 4 times more than his colleague Jonas Lossl on the other side of the line (2).
According to statistics, De Gea also officially reached the milestone of 1010 saves in the Premier League and now becomes the third goalkeeper to make more than 1000 saves in the top league “fog country” since the 2006 / season. 2007, after Ben Foster (1202), Petr Cech (1005).
If the two “guardians” above both had 15 seasons playing in the Premier League, De Gea took less than 11 seasons to reach more than 1000 saves (joined MU in 2011).
Currently, Petr Cech has retired, Ben Foster is struggling to compete for the official position at Watford, and the Spaniard is still holding the MU wooden frame. De Gea’s form helped him receive the “Best Player of the Team” award 4 times, including 3 consecutive seasons from the year (2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16).
In the 2021/22 season alone, De Gea played 27 matches in all competitions, made 103 saves and received the “Player of the Match” award 7 times. Even more shocking to know, he has made 81 saves in 21 Premier League games, more than Allison (Liverpool) and Ederson (Man City) combined (71).
It’s excellent, but De Gea has only received the “Golden Glove” award once, the title for the goalkeeper keeping the most clean sheets in the Premier League in the 2017/18 season. That also reflects the “red alert” status of the MU defense in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
Through 4 generations of head coaches (David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer) and 3 interim coaches (Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Ralf Rangnick), MU has always had problems with defence. Witnessing the disappointing performance of the “Red Devils” this season, fans also have to feel sorry for De Gea and have to wait for him to continue to “stoop” to carry the team.
